First Draft!

for my first draft i decided to use a mid shot taken during the practice shoot. i don't feel like this has properly helped to display the genre. the costume being worn wasn't prepared to display my genre and there is an additional flaw in the presentation of this. for my next draft i will have taken new photos that properly represent this and will be displayed in a way that is appealing to the eye and suits the style of the magazine. after finishing my draft, i realised that the title 'Supremacy' didn't suite the genre i have chosen, but instead sounds more like a gym than a magazine. for the next draft i am planning to use on of the other names in my possible magazine names list.

Practice Magazine Photos

These are the photos taken when we did the practice shoot. when taking the photos, i tried to take a variety of different shots, such as mid shots, close-ups and two shots. when doing this i struggled to get the light to create the impression i was trying to achieve. i also struggle when creating a low angle shot as the light above the model kept getting caught in the image. when i take my final photos for the Drafts i will change the costume of the model and use less light so that the model looks moody/darker and this will hopefully suite my genre better.

when creating my mock-up i took into consideration the conventions of a magazine and how the layout of them work to create an eye catching and professional looking magazine. such things as the Masthead, Cover lines, Barcode and the main image are the key feature to any magazine in order to follow the conventions and expectations of the reader. for this mock-up i followed the colour scheme of greens, white and browns. i chose these colours as i thought that i could link the layout with the colours on the clothing of the band 'All Time Low'. however i found this difficult to do as the cover lines wouldn't stand out. i found that the image didn't give me enough options to work with the colour scheme as make the mock-up look realistic. i also found that because of this, my mock-up didn't truly reflect my chosen genre but instead started to look similar to a 'Pop' magazine and also looked very bland and not eye catching. for my future magazine drafts i will take into consideration these aspects when taking my photos and creating the layout to my magazine.

Focus Group :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmqBUjLVPdI&feature=player_detailpage

When carrying out the focus group I found out that the audience has certain expectations for each genre of a magazine. These expectations were such things as colour schemes being either red, black, orange or grey and the layout being bold. The types of adverts being featured were to be alcohol, concerts and computer games and to be relatable to the style of the magazine.
When discussing the layout and contents of magazines, my audience mentioned how having such articles as funny celebrity stories and embarrassing stories about them would attract them into reading and buying the magazine, however the maximum price that they would pay would be about £3. Traditionally in rock magazines, there wouldn’t be articles based on embarrassing stories, instead there would be article on drug/alcohol abuse within bands and rebellious artists not following the rules of society, however the magazine I am planning to create will try to feature more than one style of genre and this will allow me to use a variety of different cover lines. I also learnt that my target audience would like to hear about up coming festivals and concerts, also mentioning that they would be interested in hearing about competitions to win meet and greet tickets or chances to go to other music events.
Overall I have discovered that to create an appealing magazine, the target audience would like to hear about new bands, band/artist stories and possible events available to them, they also would like to see adverts for fashion (get the look), technology and other relatable features to the magazine. I also need to cover a variety of different topics to cater to everyone and create a wider based audience.

Initial Ideas

Uses and Gratification Theory

Blumler and Katz’s gratification theory describes the relationship between media users and the media they choose to use, as it fulfils one or more of four chosen needs.
One of these is ‘Diversion’; this is used to help the user to escape from everyday life and create a new world to escape into to relax.
Another one of these four is the use of relating to ‘Personal Relationships’, this allows the media user to become part of a social group and to form personal relationships with others. It also helps to fulfil their need for companionship and unity.
The next one is to help the user find themselves through the use of the media, as the people presented through the TV and articles in some way reflect their own characteristics. This is called ‘Personal Identity’.
The last one is ‘Surveillance’; this is for the user to understand what is happening around them and in the lives of others. Observing the changes in their surroundings and learning about the world they live in.
When creating my magazine I will need to find away to include all of these needs for the reader. Such ways will include artist life stories, opportunities for the reader to get involved (competitions), and information on new songs, learning about band secrets and the latest news on celebrity romances.

Reader Profile

My chosen target audience are the ages of 16 to 25. I chose this as I found that the majority of modern indie/ rock are fairly young still, were, as the more older rock lovers tend to listen to classic rock. I’ve chosen to aim my magazine predominantly towards Males as there is a wider ranged audience for males with types of rock than there is women, however I am also including certain aspects of the magazine that will be aimed towards the female readers but still following the genre of music I am aiming to portray. To suit my audiences needs the adverts I will include, will need to be suited to the style of the bands featured as well. Such things as black converse, guitar shops, skinny jeans and leather jackets will be included as part of the ‘get the look’ articles. Because of the age group I have chosen, they will most likely be students or just out of university, this will mean that to cater to their needs the magazine cant cost to much otherwise they will not be able to afford it. Also because of the growing popularity with social networking sites such as ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ within teenagers and young adult, I think that these sites would be the best places to put adverts and promotions for the magazines and bands featured as this will increase the popularity of the product and help to create a name for the magazine.

Demographics
What are demographics?

Demographics are the studies on the population that take into account the age, gender, race, ethnicity, employment, education and total income. These help companies to determine the best routes to take with their movie, magazine, product or design to create the best and most suitable product for their chosen target audience. This allows them to develop their product around a specific audience and sell that product to them.

My magazine will be targeted towards the ages of 16 – 25, and edging slightly more towards being male targeted but also featuring articles and products of interest to girls interested in the genre of music I am doing. My magazine will suit both block D and C2 as it wont be two expensive to buy but will feature fairly educated language that the majority of audiences will be able to understand whether they are experienced in the music business or are just interested.
