Uses
and Gratification Theory
Blumler and Katz’s gratification theory
describes the relationship between media users and the media they choose to
use, as it fulfils one or more of four chosen needs.
One of these is ‘Diversion’; this is used to
help the user to escape from everyday life and create a new world to escape
into to relax.
Another one of these four is the use of
relating to ‘Personal Relationships’, this allows the media user to become part
of a social group and to form personal relationships with others. It also helps
to fulfil their need for companionship and unity.
The next one is to help the user find
themselves through the use of the media, as the people presented through the TV
and articles in some way reflect their own characteristics. This is called
‘Personal Identity’.
The last one is ‘Surveillance’; this is for
the user to understand what is happening around them and in the lives of
others. Observing the changes in their surroundings and learning about the
world they live in.
When creating my magazine I will need to find
away to include all of these needs for the reader. Such ways will include
artist life stories, opportunities for the reader to get involved
(competitions), and information on new songs, learning about band secrets and the
latest news on celebrity romances.
